Vera Kornienko, 86, Enjoyed Gardening & Sewing

Photo of Vera Kornienko Vera Kornienko, 86, of Lorain fell asleep in the Lord Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in her daughter’s home following a lengthy illness.

She was born November 7, 1927, in Kremenchuk, Ukraine. She had been a Lorain resident for 56 years.

Vera was an active member of Saint Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where she was the president of the church’s Sisterhood for over 25 years and a member of the church choir. She was a natural leader and had the best perogie recipe. She loved making a home for her family. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and canning.

She will be deeply missed by her daughters Lidia (Frank) Hashier of Sheffield Lake, Olga (Brad) Boney of Galveston, Texas, Helen (David) Day of Littleton, Colorado, Larissa Kornienko of Houston, Texas and Katia Kornienko of Lorain; grandchildren Peter, Philip and Paul Hashier, Alexandra and Michael Day and Christopher Nott; sister Helen Lynn of California; and nephew Mathew Lynn.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Michael in 2005; parents Ivan and Efrosyna Mohylka and brothers and sisters.

Her family will receive friends Thursday from 4 to 8 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, where a parastas service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home. Her funeral service will be Friday 11 AM in Saint Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 2304 East 34th Street, Lorain. Rev. Father Dennis Kristoff pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
