Jennie T. Matty, 90, Enjoyed Spending Time with Grandchildren

Photo of Jennie T. Matty Jennie T. Matty, (nee Horton), age 90, passed away on Monday January 27th, 2014 while a resident of the Wesleyan Village in Elyria.

She was born in Cleveland on November 16, 1923 and grew up in Homestead, Pennsylvania. She returned to Lorain in 1946 and had been a resident of Elyria since 2002.

Jennie was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain and was a former parishioner of St. Michael Byzantine Rite Catholic Church; she was a member of St. Michael’s Macrina Guild and was a regular volunteer with the monthly chicken paprikas dinners St. Michael’s.

In her free time Mrs. Matty enjoyed taking walks in the summer, playing bingo, crocheting, playing the organ, flowers, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter Cindy Kalassay (Bela) residing in Amherst and by her son Ron Matty (Sue) living in Avon. She also leaves grandchildren Charity Matty Gangale, Melanie (Matt) Harlan, Mike (Jessica) Kalassay, Chris (Jennifer) Kalassay, and Andy (Alicia) Kalassay, and great grandchildren Shauna, Alex, Cheyenne, and Jase Kalassay, and Benjamin and Ian Harlan.

Jennie was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years Paul, by her parents August and Julie (nee Toth) Horton, by sisters Elizabeth Potemry, Mary Esseny, and Rose Chonko, and by brothers John Snyder, Joe Snyder, Andrew Snyder, Frank Snyder, Paul Horton, Edward Horton, and Louis Horton.

Visitation will be Monday February 3rd from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Parastas service will be conducted at 3:00. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning with Panachida in the funeral chapel at 9:30. The Divine Liturgy will follow at 10:00 in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th Street. The Very Reverend Nicholas R.A. Rachford, J.C.L. pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
