Andrew Holko, 75, Retired from Valley City Builders Supply in 2002
Andrew "Skip" Holko, 75, of Lorain, died Thursday February 27, 2014 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a short illness.
He was born June 22, 1938 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Andrew graduated from Lorain High School in 1955 and joined the US Army serving from June 1955 to April 1958 with the rank of SP4.
For over 40 years, Andrew worked as a truck driver, driving block trucks, semis and anything with wheels for different building companies in the area. Among those companies, he drove for CMC in Elyria for 15 years and retired from Valley City Builders Supply in 2002.
Andrew was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain where he served on church council. He was a member of the American Legion #30 in Lorain and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan.
He was involved in Boy Scouts for 18 years and served as a scout master for 8 years. He belonged to two CB Clubs, the Bush Burners and the Flying Eagles using the handle Harvey Wallbanger. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hiking, traveling, collecting coins, gardening and cooking.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Marlene Holko (nee Beiswenger), sons Andrew (Tami) Holko of O’Fallon, Illinois and Chris Holko (Ashley Sutton) of Cleveland, stepson Kevin Welch of Elyria and granddaughters Greta, Brianna and Amber Holko. He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Anna Holko (nee Deliman), brother Francis “Red” Holko, sisters Mary Ann Bartley and Helen Jones and stepson Kenneth Welch.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held in the funeral chapel on Wednesday at 11:00 am. The Rev. Philip Kunz, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
