Julius Varju, 77, Avid Cleveland Indians Fan

He was born June 11, 1936 in Gérce, Hungary and had resided in Amherst for the past 4 years. He and his wife Sara were longtime South Lorain residents. They were among many Hungarian refugees that arrived in Lorain in the 1950’s that were sponsored by the Lutheran Refugee Service of the National Lutheran Council and The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
Julius attended technical school in Hungary and was a certified millwright. He worked at US Steel in Lorain for 30 years in the 3 Seamless Maintenance Department before retiring. Julius was also skilled in construction work and home improvement.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain and a longtime member of the former Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lorain. He also was a member of St. Lad’s Club and the Hungarian Young Men’s Society.
Julius was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed listening to the games on the radio while sitting in his garage. He kept up with current events and news and enjoyed reading the newspaper, gardening and watching TV Land classics and westerns. Mostly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sara Varju (nee Nagy), daughter Susan (Don) Johnson of Kent and son Julius (Kat) Varju of Lorain, grandchildren Lindsay Johnson of Santa Monica, CA, Sam Varju of Louisville, KY and Max Varju of Lorain, sister Balogh Piri and brother Varju Zoltan , both of Sarvar, Hungary and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Lorain area and Hungary. He was preceded in death by his parents Varju Samuel and Varju Olga (nee Horvath).
The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4, 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing will be held Friday from 10:30 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4501 Clinton Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Laurie Miller, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
