Edward Firment, 88, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Edward Firment Edward Firment, 88, of Amherst and formerly of Lorain, died Saturday March 29, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain after a long illness.

Ed was born March 23, 1926 in Lorain and had resided in Amherst for the past 5 years moving from Lorain.

Ed graduated from Holy Trinity School in Lorain, Clearview High School and the University of Denver where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Finance/Accounting.

He served with the US Army Air Corps during World War II as a sergeant in the 40th Bomb Group, 25th Bomb Squadron. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.

Ed worked as a certified public accountant and was a partner in the firm of T.L. Moisey Company then worked as financial advisor for 10 years at R.W. Beckett Company.

Ed served as Lorain city safety director under Mayor Woody Mathna from 1961-1963. He was active in building Lorain Catholic High School and served on their board. He was a member of the American Slovak Club in Lorain and served as president for 43 years, a director for 53 years and president emeritus. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain and served as church auditor, a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union, Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, the American Institute of Certified Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.

He is survived by his companion of 18 years Lillian Zaworski, brother Joseph Firment of Lakewood, several nieces and nephews and “special grandchildren” Joey Zaworski and Owen and Evan Lipstreu. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Firment (nee Galik), brothers John, Michael and Eugene Firment and sister Ann Bednar.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9:30 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
