George Andrijowych, 72

Photo of George Andrijowych Amherst: George Andrijowych, 72, of Amherst, died Tuesday April 29, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

Born June 17, 1941 in Nadvirna, Ukraine, he moved to Lorain in 1951 at the age of 10 and lived here most of his life until moving to Amherst 4 years ago.

George graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1960 A and then attended the Ohio State University where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology in 1966. He earned his Masters Degree in Education from Cleveland State University.

George was a teacher for Avon Lake city schools and taught Science and Math in junior high and high school for 34 years retiring in 1999.
After his retirement, George never stopped teaching. He taught his grandchildren about science and took them to libraries and parks. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and the neighborhood children who knew him affectionately as “Papa George”. He enjoyed drawing, painting and going to the mall.

He was a member of the Ohio Education Association and the Church of St. Peter in Lorain.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Gayle Andrijowych (nee Hennes), daughter Kathy Gargasz (Mike) of Amherst Township, son David Andrijowych (Katy) of Amherst Township, twin daughters Denise Kropp (Nathan) of Fredonia, New York and Deanne Miller (Justin) of Waterville, grandchildren Michael and Samantha Gargasz, Eve and Addison Andrijowych, Maxwell and Isabelle Kropp and Tyler, Gretchen and Isaiah Miller, brother Don Andrijowych of Henderson, NV and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Mykola “Nick” and Maria Andrijowycz (nee Noskiw) and brother John Andri.

The family will receive friends Friday 3-7 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
