James Catalano, 89, A Veteran, Pharmacist, and Avid Horse Racing Fan

He was born in Avella, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1925 and had been a long-time resident of Lorain.

Jim was a graduate of Lorain High School; he went on to receive his Bachelors of Science degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University. Licensed to practice in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, and Florida, Mr. Catalano had been the owner of Sylvester’s Drugs, a landmark on West 6th and Broadway in Lorain until the store’s closing in 1965.

He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Sergeant in Guam and Guadalcanal. He was a life member, former Commandant, and past Chaplain of Lofton Henderson Detachment # 474 of the Marine Corps League.

Jim was also a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1301 of Lorain and had been a former member of the Lorain Business Association.

In his free time, he was an avid horse racing enthusiast.

Survivors include daughters Katherine Catalano-Uhlman, Shirley Catalano, Valerie Catalano, and Jessica Lehman all of Lorain, son James R. Catalano of Amherst, and six grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Richard Catalano residing in Parma, and sisters Shirley Ferraro of Vermilion and Dolores Catalano of Lorain.

Mr. Catalano was preceded in death by his wife Mary (nee Parsh), by his parents Bruno and Katherine (nee Morris) Catalano, by his brother Frank “Chic” Catalano, and by his sister Donna Kiska.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Graveside services will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Marine Corps League Detachment # 576 of Elyria and Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
