Photo of Mabel Sugden Mabel Sugden (nee Clegg), 98, died peacefully on Wednesday July 2, 2014 in Brownhelm Township under the care of SMC Hospice Home Care at the home of her daughter, Jackie and son-in-law, Ron who were her caregivers.

A true Yorkshire lass, born April 9, 1916 in Low Moor, England to the late George and Lily Clegg (nee Barber), she lived a long, beautiful life. Mabel was a good student and athlete who played cricket for her church and rounders for the Yorkshire Schoolgirls. She graduated school at 14, and went straight to work in a mill. During the 1939-1945 War years, she worked in munitions, proudly making engine parts for Spitfire planes. Mabel met her husband, Harry during this time, and they married in 1944.

She later worked as a housemother for trainee midwives at the Bradford City Health Dept. for 17 years, emigrating to America with Harry upon retirement in 1980 to live with their little OH family, and became members of the English Club. Sadly, Harry passed away on April 14, 1985.

Mabel was a strong and delightful woman who commonly greeted with a jovial “Hello, Dear”, responded with an “ I’m not so bad for an old lady”, and dismissed gatherings with a heartfelt hug, kiss and a “Goodnight, God Bless”. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandma and great-grandma who was very proud of her immediate family and those she considered to be family as well. A dedicated homemaker, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, and baking, especially her delicious Victoria sponge cakes, and her youthful spirit thrived amongst animals, babies and children, which she adored.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mabel was preceeded in death by her brothers, Morris and Ronald; dear niece, Pat; in-laws, Joe and Evelyn Sugden; brother-in-laws, Jimmy and Joe and sister-in-laws, Bessie, Dot, Dolly, Edna and Betty.

She is survived by her dearly loved daughter, Jacqueline (Ronald) Mate, of Brownhelm Township; dear grandson, Major Aaron Mate, serving in South Korea; wonderful granddaughter, Rachel (Todd) Liguzinski, of North Ridgeville, delighted in her darling great-grandsons and playmates, Evan and Alec, and her family members remaining in the U.K. include her brother-in-law, Alan; nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Per Mabel’s request, she will be cremated with a memorial celebration of her life to be held at a later date. Her remains will be returned to Yorkshire, England.

Goodnight, God Bless, dear Mabel. Well done! You are Heaven’s angel now.
