John A. Getz, 66, U.S. Army Veteran
John A. Getz, age 66, of Amherst, passed away at his home on the morning of Friday August 29, 2014 following an illness of one year.He was born in Lorain on May 17, 1948 and had been a resident of Amherst since 1987.
John was a 1966 graduate of Admiral King High School. He went on to serve in the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Specialist 5 attached to the 103rd Engineer’s Company in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a life member of both VFW Post # 1662 of Amherst as well as Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans in Lorain.
Mr. Getz had been employed by the City of North Ridgeville where he served as plant operator at the French Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant; he retired in 2006 following a career that spanned thirty years with the municipality. He had also been a member of the Public Employees Retirees Organization.
John was a parishioner of Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church in South Amherst; in his free time he enjoyed watching professional football and following the Cleveland Browns.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years Barbara (nee Leshinski), along with his daughter Katharine Getz residing in Olmsted Falls. He also leaves his brother David Getz (Julie) of Holden, Missouri, and sisters Joanne Popovich of Denver, Colorado, Marilyn Getz and Patricia Sather both of Sheffield Lake, and Susan Minnich of Lorain.
Mr. Getz was preceded in death by his parents John M. and Frances (nee Gould) Getz.
A visitation for the family only will be observed in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Private funeral services will be observed on Tuesday with Reverend Lawrence Martello, Administrator of Nativity B.V.M. Church officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
