Eleanor Phelan, 93, Enjoyed Music and Broadway Musicals
Eleanor (Szarek) Phelan, (nee Matuszak), age 93, of Lorain, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 26, 2014 while a resident of the Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake.
She was born in Lorain on January 26, 1921 and had been a life-long resident of the city. Eleanor was a 1939-B graduate of Lorain High School.
She was a prominent realtor in Lorain County spending the majority of her career with Bob Szarek Real Estate; she later served as a property manager for a variety of holdings in Lorain.
Eleanor was a long-time parishioner of Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church in Lorain and was a former member of both the Nativity Parish School P.T.A. and the Nativity School Women’s Club.
Devoted to her children and grandchildren, she was extremely proud of her Polish heritage and her Catholic faith.
In her free time she enjoyed music and Broadway musicals; she also liked the challenge of solving the New York Times crossword puzzle and was so accomplished in her ability that she actually solved them using an ink pen.
Eleanor leaves her sons Alan (Kathy) Szarek of Lorain and Robert (Nancy) Szarek of Westlake, along with grandchildren Shelly, Alan, Jr., Kim, Ken, Jennifer, Robert James, and Laura Elizabeth, step-grandchildren Debbie and Terry, and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Sophie (nee Dziediec) Matuszak and her brother Raymond Matuszak.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Avenue. Reverend Robert Glepko, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will take place later in Calvary Cemetery.
