Sara Varju, 84, Enjoyed Spending Time with Grandchildren

Photo of Sara Varju Sara Varju (nee Nagy), 84, of Amherst, died Tuesday October 7, 2014 at her home while under the care of Hospice of the Western Reserve.

She was born September 3, 1930 in Sitke, Hungary and had resided in Amherst for the past four years moving from Lorain. Sara and her husband Julius were longtime South Lorain residents. They were among many Hungarian refugees that arrived in Lorain in the 1950’s that were sponsored by the Lutheran Refugee Service of the National Lutheran Council and The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

While living in Hungary, Sara worked for the Hungarian State Railways. When she moved to Lorain, she worked at Dalton Sewing Company and at Lorain Products retiring after 20 years.

Sara was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain and a longtime member of the former Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lorain where she served on the Altar Guild caring for the altar cloths and communion chalices.

Sara was the rock and Matriarch of her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, sewing, cooking and traveling to Florida. Sara was a big fan of Princess Diana and the television shows Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor. She always had a pet black cat in her home.

She is survived by her children Susan (Don) Johnson of Kent and Julius (Kat) Varju, Jr of Lorain, grandchildren Lindsay Johnson of Los Angeles, California, Sam Varju of Louisville, Kentucky and Max Varju of Lorain, sister Horvath Emila of Celldomolk, Hungary, brothers Nagy Arpad of Sitke, Hungary and Nagy Laszlo of Vakpalota, Hungary and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Julius Varju, Sr on March 10, 2014, parents Nagy Janos and Nagy Maria (nee Nemeth) and brothers and sisters Nagy Jozsef, Nagy Pista, Nagy Janos, Moruz Mariska and Nagy Lajos.

The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4, 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4501 Clinton Ave, Lorain. (Please meet at the church) The Rev. Laurie Miller, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
