Larry W. Meschke, 68, U.S. Air Force Veteran
Larry W. Meschke, 68, of Avon, died Sunday October 26, 2014 at Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake after a brief illness.
He was born November 24, 1945 in Elyria and had resided in Avon for the past 12 years. He had also lived in Lorain and Amherst.
Larry graduated from Elyria High School. He served with the US Air Force from 1967-1969 as a sergeant in the 834th Civil Engineering Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
Larry worked at Ohio Screw Products in Elyria in the maintenance department for 32 years before retiring. He then worked as a patient transporter at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain for 10 years retiring last year. He really enjoyed his time working at Mercy.
Larry was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avon and would help take communion to people in nursing homes. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #0787 F& AM in Elyria, the El Rey Grotto, King Solomon #56 and the American Legion Post #12 of Elyria.
He enjoyed making people smile, had a positive outlook on life and gave people hope especially while he worked at Mercy Hospital. Larry was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan, participated in many bowling leagues and was an avid fisherman who loved spending time on Lake Erie in his boat named the Holy Cow. He was a great father, stepfather and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years Barbara Meschke, children Mark Meschke and Valerie Meschke O’Neal, stepsons John, Joseph and Michael Zelina, stepdaughter Michele Zelina Hiatt and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 19 years Evelyn Meschke (nee Szuhy) and parents Addison and Virginia Meschke (nee Garland).
The family will receive friends Wednesday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 11:00 am at the Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where VFW Post #1079 of Elyria will conduct military honors.
