Mary Ellen Simonovich, 87, Enjoyed Family Activities
Mary Ellen Simonovich (nee Flaherty), age 87, a longtime resident of Lorain, passed away peacefully at her Lakewood residence on the afternoon of Friday October 31, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Lorain on April 30, 1927; Mary Ellen attended elementary school at St. Mary Academy and was a 1944 graduate of Lorain High School. She went on to enroll in the St. Joseph Hospital School of Practical Nursing.
Mrs. Simonovich was employed as a clerk in the Tabulating Office of U.S. Steel Corporation from 1944 through 1949. She later worked in cafeteria services for the Lorain City School System.
Mary Ellen was a life-long parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lorain. She was a member of the St. Mary Women’s Club as well as the Beta Sigma Phi Working Woman’s Social Fraternity. She formerly served as a homeroom mother as well as an officer and member of the P.T.A. at her children’s schools; she also actively attended the monthly Breakfast Club meetings of her high school graduating class.
Mrs. Simonovich was a patron of the Cleveland Museum of Art. In her free time she enjoyed family activities as well as attending her grandchildren’s school and athletic events. She liked traveling with family an friends and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns; additional interests included solving puzzles and listening to music. She was also an avid reader who was fascinated by the origin and derivation of words and phrases.
Survivors include her son Michael Simonovich of Seattle, and daughters Mary Jo Farr (David) and Janet Simonovich-Nelson (John) both residing in Lakewood. She also leaves grandchildren Corey Farr, Bob, Dan, and Pat Simonovich, Will Carroll, and D.J. and Averi Simonovich. In addition, she is survived by great grandchildren Brielle, Samuel, Isaac, and Lizzy, as well as her sister Judy Zvosecz (Joseph) of Lorain.
Mrs. Simonovich was preceded in death by her husband William in 2008, by sons Donald in 1985 and B.J. in 2005, by her daughter Carol Carroll in 2009, by her parents Roy and Lillian (nee Beam) Flaherty, and by brothers James, Paul, and William Flaherty.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 until 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church (corner of Reid Avenue and West 8th Street). Reverend James Becherer will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
