Dr. Howard D. Greenberg, 89, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Dr. Howard D. Greenberg Dr. Howard D. Greenberg, 89, of Bay Village formerly of Lorain passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness.

Dr. Greenberg was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 17, 1924, the son of the late Jacob and Jeanette (nee Marshall) Greenberg. He was a graduate of Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh and in 1948 graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper attaining the rank of Corporal during WW II. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. To assist in honoring D-Days' 50th anniversary, Dr. Greenberg jumped from a plane onto Normandy Beach and again at the 50th Anniversary of Victory in Europe known as the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, serving as Post Commander for many years; a Life member of Bay Village VFW and was a member of the 82nd Airborne.

He was an active member of both Agudath B'Nai Israel Temple in Lorain and Temple B'nai Abraham in Elyria. He served as Temple President of the Temple B'Nai Abraham for several terms.

In 1954, Dr. Greenberg began his practice in Lorain caring for his patients for more than 40 years. One of the highlights of his career was when his daughter, Susan joined his practice in 1986 and they worked together until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the American Optometric Association.

Dr. and Mrs. Greenberg donated a room in the Ophthalmology Department at Hadassah Hospital in Israel, he was a community service volunteer at Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland and enjoyed traveling the world over.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Selma C. (nee Forman) Greenberg, daughter Dr. Susan E. (William) Thompson of Chapel Hill, NC, sons Robert D. (Brenda) Greenberg, of Elyria, Michael E Greenberg of Los Angeles, CA, Scott E Greenberg of Columbus, grandsons Michael Greenberg and Benjamin Thompson.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Sheldon Greenberg and sisters Annabelle Medven and Rosaline Solomon.

Funeral Services will be held in the Schwartz Spence, Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street Lorain at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2014 with Rabbi Joel Chazin, officiating.

Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery, Sheffield Township with full military honors provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and VFW Post 451.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah 1715 Meister Road Lorain, Ohio 44053.
