Dmytro Holowackyj, 96, Enjoyed Gardening & Camping

Photo of Dmytro Holowackyj Dmytro Holowackyj, 96 of Lorain, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, December 13, 2014 in Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain following a brief illness.

He was born September 3, 1918 in Isakiv, Ukraine. In 1949, he emigrated from Germany to Amsterdam, New York; he moved to Buffalo, New York in 1953 and then made Lorain his home in 1957.

Dmytro retired in 1980 from the paint department of the Ford Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon. He worked for Ford for 25 years. He was an active member of Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic of Lorain. He was also a member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee.

He enjoyed gardening and camping. He was a member of the Ukrainian American Youth Association (C.Y.M.) and was a founding member of Chortycia in Huntington Township.

He will be dearly missed by his daughters Maria (Chuck) Monticue of New London and Oksana “Sandy” (Alex) Chunuk of Lorain; brother Stephan Holowackyj of Ukraine; grandchildren Steve Monticue, John Chunuk, and Chris Wellert; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years Rozalija in 2008, daughter Olga Holowackyj in 1968; son George Holowackyj in 2007; parents Jurko and Katarina (nee Petrychyn) Holowackyj, and a sister, Maria Holowackyj.

His family will receive friends Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio. Panachida service will be Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Friends may also call from 9:30 until the time of Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. at Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, East 31st Street and Charleston Avenue, Lorain. The Very Rev. Canon Steven M. Paliwoda, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain Ohio.
