Walter F. Jachym, 89, U.S. Air Force Veteran

His death came on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his father’s passing which occurred when Walt was only fourteen years of age. Born in Lorain on May 30th, 1925, he remained a life-long resident of the city. Walt was a graduate of Lorain High School.
Following his graduation, he entered the military and fulfilled duty assignments as a pilot attached to the 2537th Army Air Force Base Unit while stationed at Perrin Field, Texas. Achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, Walt was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon as well as the World War II Victory Medal. He was a long-time member of Amvets Post # 47 of Lorain.
Mr. Jachym was employed as an accountant at United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired on January 6, 1989 following a career that spanned forty-two years with the steel producer. Following retirement, he served for more than a decade as the Lorain City Sealer as well as a Consumer Protection Agent under the mayoral administrations of Alex M. Olejko and Joseph F. Koziura.
He was a parishioner of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
Known for his keen intellect, Walt was regarded as a super-shopper and had a knack for always finding the best bargains available whenever he made a purchase. He was an avid reader who spent his free time attending auctions as well as hunting, fishing, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years Darlene (nee Stitak), by his son Frank (Christina) Jachym of Lorain, and by daughters Pam Jachym, Lisa Gasper (Allen) , Mary Margaret Jachym, Melanie Lucas, and Deidrie Sedivy (John) all of Lorain, as well as Monica Smith (Doug) residing in Amherst.
He also leaves twelve grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, along with his brother John Jachym of Lorain , and sisters Mildred Mania Komar and Cecilia Honey Knight both of Lorain , Jeanette Young of Florida and Stella Paysor of North Carolina .
Walt was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mary (nee Korabik) Jachym, and his brother Edward.
Mr. Jachym’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Mercy New Life Hospice for their care throughout his illness. If death has to be certain, let it be gentle.
Private family funeral services will be conducted in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel. Military honors conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor will follow the service.
