Dominic DeSilvester, 90, U.S. Navy Veteran

He was born in Lorain , Ohio on July 21, 1925 and had been a resident of Lorain County for his entire life. Mickey was a 1942 graduate of Lorain High School and went on to attend Kent State University.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and fulfilled duty assignments as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate aboard the USS Pokomoke in the Pacific Theater. Dominic was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Area Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was an active member of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 in Lorain and participated in a variety of functions there including serving as a member of the post’s Military Color Guard.
He was employed as a supervisor in the inspection department at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired from the steel producer in 1987.
Dominic was a parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain and was currently attending St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst .
In his free time he enjoyed golf and bowling and participated in leagues hosted by the IAV and U.S. Steel Management Club. Additional interests included playing cards and travel with a particular fondness for casino bus trips.
Mickey was also a loyal follower of the Cleveland Indians and enjoyed watching all sporting events.
He is survived by his daughters Cindy Szakats (Don) of Amherst and Jane Karpinski (Craig) of Avon Lake . He also leaves eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and his brother Joseph DiSilvester residing in Lorain .
Dominic was preceded in death by his wife Anne (nee Demko) in 1997, by his parents Nicola and Marianne (nee Trubiano) DiSilvestre, and by brothers Nicholas DiSilvester, and John DeSilvester.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue , Lorain. Additional visitation will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Church 200 St. Joseph Drive in Amherst on Thursday from 9:45 a.m. until the time of his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Timothy J. O’Connor, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Italian-American Veterans Post # 1.
