Thomas K. Nelson, age 94, of North Ridgeville passed away peacefully Saturday March 12, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Beaverdale, PA and had resided in North Ridgeville the past 59 years after moving from Lakewood.
Mr. Nelson served in the US Army 55th Field Artillery Battalion during WW II. He was a recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
He owned and operated Nelson SOHIO at the corner of Rt. 83 and Butternut Ridge Rd in North Ridgeville in the 1960’s. He also worked over 35 years with General Motors. Retiring in 1987 from the Fisher Body Plant in Elyria, and previously worked at the Allison Tank Plant, Cleveland. Prior the GM, he drove at street car for CTS in the early 1950’s.
An avid sports fan, he coached Hot Stove Baseball when his boys were young, he enjoyed playing cards, working in his yard and spending time with his family. He was a Life Member of the Elyria Elks Club where he enjoyed bowling and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Martha (nee Prock), four sons, Thomas K Nelson Jr. of Olmsted Township, Daniel M. (Holly Dellman) Nelson, of Elyria, Kenneth A. (Claudia) Nelson of North Ridgeville, and Brian (Betty) Nelson of Elyria, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann (nee Keenan), father John “Jack” Nelson, great grandson Hayden Keenan Nelson, three sisters and two brothers.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4-8 PM at Bogner Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services 36625 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville where services will be held 10 AM Wednesday. Reverend Charles Diederich will officiate. Inurnment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at a time to be announced.
