Eleanor A. Benner, 76, Dedicated Her Life to Serving as a Foster-Parent

Photo of Eleanor A. Benner Eleanor A. Benner (nee Brown), age 76, of Elyria Township , passed away at her residence on the morning of Thursday August 18, 2016 following a brief illness.

She was born in Black River Township , Ohio on December 23, 1939 and had been a long-time resident of Lorain County.

Eleanor, along with her late husband, Eugene, dedicated her life to serving as a foster-parent to in excess of eight hundred youths over a period of fifty-nine years. Accepting her first foster child when she was only nineteen, Eleanor officially retired from the parenting program in April of 2015.

Although being around children was one of her favorite things in life, she was also an animal lover who also found time to pursue a host of other interest including gardening and planting flowers.

She is survived by children Tina Nagy of Avon, Brian (Karrie) Benner of Elyria Township, Evelyn Renee Benner of Elyria Township , Steven Benner of Lorain , Ashley Benner of Elyria , April Taylor of Lorain , David Benner of Elyria Township and Sean Benner also of Elyria Township . In addition she leaves ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, sisters Helen (Michael) Wittriech of Elyria Township and Jane E. (Amos) Ison of Lorain, along with sisters-in-law Joyce Fallet of Columbus, Carol Emerick of Norwalk , Diane (Woody) Skiver also of Norwalk , Linda (Oscar) Sue of Vermilion, and brother-in-law David Sanders of Clyde.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in May of 1996, by her parents Charles and Thelma (nee Kane) Brown, by brothers Charles, Jr., Raymond, Franklin, Gerald, and Ralph, and sisters Bernice Todd and Esther Marie Ford.

Friends will be received in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue in Lorain on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until time of funeral services at 7:00 p.m.
