Phyllis May Beaver, 91, Avid Reader

Photo of Phyllis May Beaver Phyllis May (Allen) Beaver of Lorain died in her sleep at home on the morning of September 25, 2016.

Phyllis was 91 years old; she had resided with her daughter, Valerie, for the last four years.

Phyllis was born in Leicester, England on April 1, 1925. She married an American soldier during World War II. After the war she traveled to America on the USS Washington and arrived in the United States on April 20, 1946. A few years later she became a naturalized citizen. For many years she worked as an expert seamstress using the skills she had learned as a teen attending tailoring school in England.

Mrs. Beaver was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth (Smith) and Harold Allen; and husbands John J. Staherek and Chester F. Beaver.

She is survived by her children, Valerie (Daniel J.) Smith of Lorain, Phyllis Staherek of Mathews, N.C., Mrs. Joan (John) Barnes of Mathews NC, and John Staherek of Geneva, OH; three grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Mrs. Becky Torres (Jorge), and Jo Ann Casto; and two great-grandchildren, Maya Torres and Indanel Torres. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial with her husband Chester will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.

Phyllis was an avid reader. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Phyllis to the Foundation of the Lorain Public Library System, 351 Sixth Street, Lorain OH 44052.
