Gerald J. Haas, 71, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Gerald J. Haas Gerald J. Haas, age 71, of Lorain, passed away at the Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph on the evening of Sunday October 16, 2016 following a brief illness.

He was born in Lorain on May 1, 1945 and was a 1963 graduate of Lorain High School.

Mr. Haas was a veteran of the United States Navy fulfilling duty assignments as a Fireman 3rd Class during the Viet Nam War; he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

He was employed as a General Foreman for the American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain for more than two decades. Following the plant’s closing in 1983 he joined Lucas Plumbing where he worked as a master plumber for five years. In 1988 he joined the Ford Motor Company as a pipefitter and retired from the automaker in 2008 following a career that spanned twenty years of service in both Ohio and Michigan.

Survivors include his wife of eighteen years Mary Lou (nee DeGenaro), sons Justin Haas (Kaleigh) of North Royalton, and Jeremy Haas (Cindi) of Fairview Park, step-daughter Lorie Ferenzi of Cincinnati, and step-son Christopher Ferenzi of Lorain. He also leaves grandchildren Aliya and Carter Haas, step-grandchildren Kristina and Jalin Ferenzi, brother Ronald Haas (Karen) of Amherst, and a host of nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Mr. Haas’ wishes, graveside services for the family will be conducted privately in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
