Eugene A. Taliano, 91, U.S. Army Veteran

He was born November 20, 1924 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Gene graduated from Lorain High School Class of 1943A and then served with the US Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in Company A 97th Chemical Mortar Battalion. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal.
Gene worked as an Engineer for the B&O Railroad and CSX Railroad for 43 years retiring in 1986. During the Bicentennial of the Chessie System, Gene was chosen to be the engineer of a steam locomotive as it made its way through our area as part of an east coast tour celebrating the railroad company’s history.
Gene founded the local chapter of NARVRE (National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees) and served many terms as its president. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and served as a union rep for the United Transportation Union. He was a charter member of Italian-American Veterans Post #1 in Lorain and a member of AMVETS Post #47 in Lorain. Gene participated in Honor Flight where he flew to Washington DC to visit the World War II memorial. He enjoyed gardening, yardwork, traveling and casino trips.
He is survived by his sons: Daniel Taliano (Gale) of Sheffield Village and Nick Taliano (Margie) of Cuyahoga Falls; grandchildren: Julie Hurst (Ted) of Stow and Jaclyn Taliano (Colleen Bozzi) of Takoma Park, Maryland and great grandchildren Anna and Dean Hurst. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Betty J. Taliano (nee Jurina) in 2014, parents Rosario and Mary Taliano (nee Todarello) and brothers Dominic, Joseph, James and Rocco Taliano.
The family will receive friends Friday November 11th from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday November 12th at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. Peter Parish, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. John Retar, pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Lorain, will preside. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where IAV Post #1 will conduct military honors.
