Elroy F. Smith, 96, U.S. Navy Veteran

Elroy F. Smith, age 96, of Lorain, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday December 20, 2016.

He was born in Ault, Colorado on September 22, 1920 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1958; he had previously been a resident of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Elroy was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy where he fulfilled duty assignments as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class aboard the U.S.S. Ranger. He was a past member of Mullen-Murray VFW Post # 451 as well as a social member of Italian-American veterans Post # 1 both of Lorain.

Mr. Smith had been employed as a skilled trade’s mechanic at Ford Motor Company’s Lorain Assembly Plant; he retired in 1986 following a career that spanned more than forty years with the automaker. He had been a long-time member of United Autoworker’s Local 425.

A parishioner of St. Peter Parish in Lorain, Elroy continually kept himself busy with a host of mechanical as well as household projects throughout his lifetime. Amongst his accomplishments was a gazebo which he constructed in the backyard of his Lorain residence. When not engaged in a project, he was a fan of both television westerns and the History Channel.

He is survived by his son Gary of Lorain along with several nephews in Colorado and cousins in Iowa.

Elroy was preceded in death by his wife Doris (nee Robillard), daughter Karen in infancy, parents Clinton and Maggie (nee Mason) Smith, brother Robert Smith, and sister Elizabeth Reed.

Friends may call Monday December 26th from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Parish, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Reverend Craig Hovanec, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
