Stella D. Vasu, 95, Enjoyed Casino Bus Trips

Photo of Stella D. Vasu Stella D. Vasu (nee Chaildin), 95, of Lorain, died Sunday December 25, 2016 in the emergency room at University Hospital Amherst Health Center.

She was born January 24, 1921 in Harvey, West Virginia and grew up in Marianna, Pennsylvania before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Mt. Sinai Nursing School in Cleveland and became a registered nurse in 1949. She moved to Lorain and began working as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for many years. Later, she became nursing supervisor at Lorain Community Hospital. During that time, she attended Kent State University and earned a Bachelor Degree in Education in 1973. She left her career in nursing and began her teaching career at St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Elyria Township and then taught in the Cleveland Public School System for many years. Stella continued to substitute teach in the Lorain City School system well into her 80’s.

Stella was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and a very dedicated member of the church choir.

Stella had a passion for selling Mary Kay cosmetics and was a long-time consultant with them. She served as recording secretary for Patria Romana si Bihoreana and was a member of the St. Joseph Senior Group in Amherst. She enjoyed casino bus trips to Windsor, Canada, reading and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her children: Susan Marr (John) and Nick Vasu (Paula), all of Lorain; grandchildren: Melanie Flanagan (Aaron) of Savannah, Georgia, Dante Vasu of Lorain and Natalie Vasu of Lorain; step grandchildren: Ali Marr of Lorain and Anna Marr of New York City; brother Anthony Chaildin of Marianna, PA and sister Margaret Griffith of Westlake. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years Virgil Vasu in 1987, parents Michael & Mary Chaildin (nee Zajac), brothers John, Joseph and George Chaildin and sisters Anne Chaildin and Helen Kunch.

The family will receive friends Wednesday December 28th from 4:00-8:00pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Thursday December 29th at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic, 41295 N Ridge Rd, Elyria Twp. The Rev. Donald Dunson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Twp.
