Betty A. Burns, 85, Will Be Dearly Missed

Photo of Betty A. Burns Betty A. Burns, (nee Kiska), age 85, of Lorain, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday January 11th, 2017 while surrounded by her family at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon, Ohio following a brief illness.

Betty was born in Lorain on March 30, 1931 and remained a life-long resident of the city. She was a 1949 graduate of Lorain St. Mary High School.

She was very active as a parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain and was currently attending St. Peter Parish.

Betty was widely known for her willingness to volunteer her time and energy to countless numbers of groups and organizations throughout the area including eighteen years of volunteer service to Mercy Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of both St. Ann’s Lodge Branch 114 as well as Slovak Catholic Sokols Wreath 111. In addition, she had been a member of the Mar-Win Club for seventy-two years.

She is survivied by her children Kathleen (Dennis) Hawke of Lorain, Peggy (Rick) Catley of Wakeman, Bobbie (Dr. Krag) Churchill of North Ridgeville, David J. (Janet) Burns of Lorain, and James (Denise) Burns of Vermilion. Additional survivors include ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and her sister Marcella Sliva of Lorain.

Betty was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband of sixty years David Burns in 2011, by her parents John G. and Anne M. (nee Ganobscik) Kiska, by brothers Gerald and Jack Kiska, and by her sister Janet Sutten.

Friends may call Friday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter Parish – 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Craig Hovanec, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family encourages memorial contributions to either the Eternal Word Television Network or to St. Mary of the Woods.
