David E. Noonan, 78, Loved Card Games with Family and Friends

Photo of David E. Noonan David E. Noonan, Sr, 78, of Lorain, passed away at home with his loving family at his side on Wednesday January 25, 2017 while under the care of Mercy New Life Hospice.

He was born January 29, 1938 in Gary, West Virginia and had been a resident of Lorain since 1951.

David graduated from Lorain High School in 1956 and married Shirley Turnage in June 1957. He worked at American Shipbuilding, Fruehauf Trailer and US Steel as a welder. In 1964, he and his wife received their diploma from Hotel/Motel Management School after completion of resident training at the Monaco Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Both were employed at the Holiday Inn in Elyria. He retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he worked since 1982. He loved his job there working out of Oberlin and Avon.

David was involved in several labor unions over the years and was still active with OCSEA until recently. He had held several different positions in the unions and was very concerned with employee safety.

He served with the Ohio Army National Guard, Company D, 112th Engineer Battalion for nine years beginning in Elyria and moving to Lorain.

He was a member of the Firelands Archery Club and entered competition with other clubs. He enjoyed deer hunting with his dad in Pennsylvania. He loved bowling and participated in league bowling until last season. He bowled in the USBC Open Championships each year and received a 35-year award. David enjoyed boating from 1978 to 2015 and went on several bus trips to various casinos. He loved card games with family and friends. He enjoyed his family very much! He had a passion for Hot Wheels collections and was always looking for them regardless of the city or state he was visiting.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Shirley Noonan (nee Turnage), son David E. Noonan, Jr, daughter Judy (nee Noonan) Hyka, granddaughter Melinda (nee Noonan) Falish (Jason), great granddaughters Ali and Kilee Falish and sisters Anita (nee Noonan) Jewell and Connie (nee Belcher) Brown (Ron). He was preceded in death by his mother Eva Belcher (nee Mitchem), father Eddie W. Belcher and brothers Willard Noonan and Jerry W. Belcher.

The family will receive friends Monday January 30th from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-9:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 31st at 11:00 am in the funeral chapel. The Rev. Scott Skeens, pastor of the Sheffield Church of God, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon where VFW Post #1079 of Elyria will conduct military honors.
