Dora M. Killen, 84, Enjoyed Gambling, Cooking and Sports

Photo of Dora M. Killen Dora M. Killen, 84, (nee Hess) of Lorain passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, unexpectedly.

Mrs. Killen was born in Haywood, WV on May 18, 1932, the daughter of the late Richard M. and Georgia May (nee McCutcheon) Hess.

Dora was a graduate of East Fairmont High School in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1950. She then graduated from Fairmont State College in 1957 with a Bachelor degree in Education. She served in the US Army WAC receiving the Army of Occupation Medal - Germany.

Dora worked as a teacher at Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School District. She began her teaching career in Lorain City Schools, taught full time at Sheffield and then returned to part time substitute teaching in Lorain. She coached softball at Avon High School. She was a volleyball and basketball referee for major tournaments, high schools and colleges.

Dora was an active member of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church. She served as an Usher and worked in the food pantry, clothing drives, and cooked many meals for other volunteers.

Dora was a member of Amvets Post 47, Moose Club, American Legion, Polish Club, VFW Post 451, Knights of Columbus, Northeast Ohio Basketball Referee Association, served as secretary for 30+ years until her death for the Northern Ohio Volleyball Official's Association.

Dora enjoyed gambling, cooking, sports, and being a volleyball and basketball referee. She played softball into her fifties. She enjoyed camping, and traveled to all fifty states and abroad. She bred and showed Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) for many years.

Dora is survived by her husband of 65 years, E. Curtis Killen, daughters, Kathryn J. (Roger) Kavanah of Taylorsville, KY, Robin D Killen-Bennett, of Lorain, Rhonda M. (Lance) Rodencal of Cataula, GA, Tammy L. (Joseph) Hustedde of Bellevue, NE, sons Richard C. (Patti) Killen of Lorain, Thomas E. (Susie) Killen of Lorain, grandchildren: Jenny Ketcham, Jeff Killen, C.J. Rodencal, Analani Hurley, Mikaela Rodencal, Jacob Hustedde, Chance Hustedde, Riley Hustedde, Zach Bennett, Roger Kavanah II, Mary White, Sarah Baker, JoAnna Kavanah, 18 great grandchildren and her brother, Roy T. "Tom" Hess, of Las Vegas, NV.

Friends may call on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 3-7 p.m.. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 10:30 in the funeral home with Rev. Greg Sellers, pastor, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon.

The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053 in her memory.
