Harriet L. Hageman, 101, Avid Gardener and Excellent Seamstress
Harriet L Hageman (nee Porter) passed away Monday March 13, 2017 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home in Avon at the age of 101.
She was born on the Great Plains in Kearney, Nebraska on February 6, 1916, the daughter of Pard and Rose (nee Polski) Porter. Her father died when she was a baby and her mother later married Ed O’Dea, a farmer in Nebraska where he loved his adopted girls as his own.
Harriet received a degree at Kearney State Teachers College in 1939 (a rarity for women in those days). She taught physical education and home economics in Kansas during WW II where she met her husband, the late John Hageman, while he served as lieutenant in the 7th Cavalry Division. After the war, they moved to Lorain (Jake’s hometown) and took over the family business “Hageman Shoes” located on Broadway in downtown Lorain.
Harriet was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Marion Guild, a Eucharistic Minister, a daily communicant and Girl Scout Leader. She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women. She was an avid gardener, excellent seamstress and baker/homemaker and belonged to several bridge clubs.
She is survived by daughter Patricia Hageman and husband, Alan Schwartz; son Paul Hageman and wife, Calmay; daughter Carol Hageman and husband, Peter Restivo; grandchildren Nicole Hageman, Danielle Hageman and husband Matthew Susler, Madelynn and husband Bill Keckeis, Summer Ann Restivo, Peter W. Restivo and great grandchildren Tanner Tubbs and Olivia Keckeis. She was preceded in death by her husband John Hageman and her sister Adah Lancaster.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua, 1305 E. Erie Ave, Lorain on Friday March 24th at 10:00am. The Rev. Edward Smith, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be with her beloved Jake at Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain. The family will receive friends at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel on Saturday March 25th from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
