Carl W. Saltis, 81, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Carl W. Saltis Carl W. Saltis, age 81, of Lorain, passed away at the Mercy new Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph on the afternoon of Thursday May 25th, 2017 following an extended illness.

Born in Elyria on July 13, 1935, he had been a resident of Lorain for the majority of his life; Carl was a 1953 graduate of Lorain High School.

He went on to serve in the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Specialist 4 attached to the 13th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Missile Battalion. Carl held a Rifle Marksman’s Badge and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a Safety Specialist for the B.F. Goodrich Corporation (Poly One) in Avon Lake; he retired in 1992 following a career that spanned thirty-two years with the company.

Carl’s favorite hobbies included hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed travel which included trips to numerous destinations throughout the continental United States, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. He and his wife had been on six oceanic cruises as well.

He leaves his wife of fifty-nine years Frances (nee Giardina), and son Randy Saltis (Gayle) residing in Amherst. Additional survivors include grandsons Jonathan and Jeffrey Hardesty, granddaughter Jennifer Powell (Stephen), brother Regis Saltis, Jr. (Linda) of Elyria, sister Renee Kurowski (Walt) of Mansfield, and several nieces and nephews. .

Carl was preceded in death by his son Richard W. Saltis in 1986, his father Regis Saltis, Sr. and mother Beverly Saltis (nee Holtzman).

Carl’s wish was to have a closed casket with no visitation prior to services. Please join his family for the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday May 30, 2017 in St. Peter Parish, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Reverend Gerald J. Keller will officiate. Cremation will occur at a later date with burial of the cremated remains to follow in Calvary Cemetery.

The family encourages memorial contributions to either the Neighborhood Alliance – 457 Griswold Rd., Elyria, OH 44035 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, Lorain.
