Helen I. Kastl, 94, Enjoyed Fishing and Gardening

She was born July 2, 1922 in Rovno, Czechoslovakia and had resided in Lorain since 1930.
Helen graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1941 B. During World War II, she worked as an inspector at General Industries in Elyria. Afterward, she attended St. Luke Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated with the class of 1947 B. She had additional training at BLI (Women’s & Brigham Hospital) in Boston as well as Lorain County Community College.
Helen worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain as a Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery for over 20 years retiring in 1980. She also worked for Dr. Henry Marsico when he began his practice.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain where she was active in church fundraisers such as the Swiss Steak Dinner and bake sales. She was a member of the Heartland Circle of First United Methodist Church, a life member of United Methodist Women and a life member of St. Luke School of Nursing Alumni Association.
During a hospital fundraiser in 1948, she met her late husband Leo and were married one year later in First Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Helen enjoyed fishing, gardening, classical and country-western music and reading with a fondness for romance novels, mysteries and world literature.
She is survived by her amazing sons: David Kastl (Mary Anne) of Lorain and Clifton Kastl (Audrey) of Elyria Township; grandchildren: Tracey Kastl, Joel Kastl, Allison Mims (Branton), Abby Kastl & Adam Kastl (Brianna) and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo J. Kastl in 2009, parents John and Helen Ilcisko (nee Katrenack), brother John A. Ilcisko and sister Mary Ann Jones.
The family will receive friends Monday June 19th from 5:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday June 20th at 10:00 am in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Karen Hollingsworth, pastor of Faith United Methodist Church in Lorain, presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
