Ray A. Ferrell, 89, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Ray A. Ferrell Ray A. Ferrell, 89, of Lorain, died peacefully on Saturday December 30, 2017 at his home.

He was born July 26, 1928 in Sprigg, West Virginia and had resided in Lorain since 1952.

Ray served with the US Navy from 1946-1949. He worked at US Steel in Lorain as a Foreman in the blast furnace retiring in 1985 after 37 years.

Ray was a licensed private pilot and avid flyer who owned his own Cessna airplane. He was a member of the Lorain County Airport flying club, the US Steel Management Club and Black River Masonic Lodge #552 of Lorain.

He was a devoted husband and father. He served as president of the Homewood School PTA and Whittier School PTA and was the first president of the Southview High School PTA and a member of Southview High School Athletic Boosters.

Ray enjoyed bowling, golf, camping, playing cards and was a sports enthusiast.

He is survived by his children: Deborah K. Harris (Randy) of Westin, West Virginia, Terri L. Brown (Richard) of Akron, Michele L. Spiroff of Avon, Sandra Jo Penman (William) of Katy, Texas, Richard Ferrell (Bonnie) of Demopolis, Alabama and Michael R. Ferrell of Elyria; 19 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and sisters Shirley Athey (Bernard) of Dallas, Texas and Lena Perkins of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Nellie F. Ferrell (nee Nichols) in 2016, parents Richard and Sarah Ferrell (nee Luke); son-in-law George Spiroff; sister Faye Lambert and brother William Ferrell.

The family will receive friends Tuesday January 2nd from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday January 3rd at 10:00 am in the funeral chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
