Walter Kulchycky, 92, Will Be Deeply Missed

Photo of Walter Kulchycky Walter (Wolodymyr) Kulchycky, 92, of Lorain, fell asleep in the Lord Sunday, February 25, 2018 in his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 5, 1925 in Turka, Ukraine to Florian and Olah (née Sawaryn) Kulchycky. Because of approaching Russian Army in the summer or 1944, he left his homeland and fled to Austria together with other refugees to escape Communist persecution. For the next five years Walter lived in Austria and Germany in displaced persons camp in Regensburg.

Walter arrived in Lorain on October 1949 and soon became member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Walter met Maria who came from Ukraine to visit his sister in Philadelphia and after short time they married. Walter retired in 1987 from the Finishing End of #2 Seamless Pipe Mill of U. S. Steel, Lorain Works. He worked there for 38 years. Walter was a very active member of the Church Committee, for many years cut grass and helped the pastors as their driver. Walter helped with making pyrohy and previously helped at the church Bingo fundraising nights. Walter was also a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1104, Lorain.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 18 years Maria Kulchycky (née Lacyk) of Lorain and family in Ukraine.

Other than his parents Walter was preceded in death by his sisters Halya and Yaroslava.

Friends may call Wednesday, February 28 from 4 until time of Panachida at 6 PM. Prayers will be Thursday 9:30 AM in the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM at Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, East 31st Street and Charleston Avenue, Lorain. Father Steven M. Paliwoda, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain Ohio.
