Valloyd Shibley, 73, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Valloyd Shibley Valloyd “Sonny” Shibley, age 73, of Vermilion, passed away at University Hospitals Cleveland on the morning of Saturday June 23rd following a brief illness.

He had previously resided in both Lorain and Sheffield Lake .

Sonny was a graduate of Lorain High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He fulfilled duty assignments as an Aircraft Boatswain’s Mate aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. He was a member of Amvets Post # 47 in Lorain .

Sonny was employed as a maintenance man at the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department retiring in 2007 following ten years of service with the county agency. He had previously worked as a technician in the Mike Bass Body Shop for eighteen years.

A member of Knights of Columbus Council 637. Sonny held a deep passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, and always being close to the lake.

He leaves his wife of twenty-seven years Ann (nee Barczak), son Jack Basford of Vermilion, and daughters Angela Banas (Ed) of Montverde, Florida, Tabitha Hile of Riverview, Florida, and Gina Seitz of Port Clinton. Additional survivors include nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and sister Darlyn Heim of Norwalk .

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Valloyd L. and Dorothy (nee Baker) Shibley, and sister Judy Stefani.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue , Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel. Reverend Bob Eddy will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery , Lorain where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria .
