John W. Kosakowski, 98, U.S. Army Veteran

Born in Amherst on May 26, 1920, John had been a resident of Florence Township for the past four years; previously, he had been a long-time resident of Lorain.

Mr. Kosakowski was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran fulfilling duty assignments as a Private First Class attached to the 48th Armored Infantry Battalion. He participated in action in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. John was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with Five Bronze Stars as well as the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a conductor for the Lake Terminal Railroad Company retiring in 1980.

Mr. Kosakowski was a long-time parishioner of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain and was currently attending St. Peter Parish. He also had been a member of the former Polish-American Citizen’s Club of Lorain.

John was an accomplished league bowler who also enjoyed watching sports and following the Cleveland Cavaliers and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Survivors include daughter Sandra Cook (Kim), son Raymond, grandchildren Shelley (David), David (Jessica), great grandchildren Ashlen, Baylen, Cullen, and Riley, daughter-in-law Nancy Kosakowski, and sisters Theresa Tomaszewski and Helen Olexa.

John was preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Toth) in 2014, his parents Stanislaus and Sophia (nee Kunkel) Kosakowski, brothers John Valentine, Carl, and Virgil, along with sisters Elizabeth Heider, Frances Kovach, Stella Mihalic, and Mary Ann Jessel.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Graveside services will be observed at 11:00 a.m. on Monday in Calvary Cemetery. Those attending are requested to gather at the main entrance to the cemetery ten minutes prior to the time of services. Military Honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.

John’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver Colleen Parker, her daughter Kim, and granddaughter Miranda for the loving and compassionate care they provided to him during his declining health.
