Norm H. Failing, 84, Former Elyria Community Development Director

Photo of Norm H. Failing Norm H. Failing, 84, of Elyria, died Tuesday December 29, 2020 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain after a short illness.

He was born December 10, 1936 in Oak Park, Illinois and had resided in Elyria most of his life.

Norm graduated from Concordia University in Chicago with a Bachelor Degree in Education. He attended Kent State University earning his Masters Degree.

Norm served as Community Development Director for the city of Elyria for 30 years before retiring. He had also served in the city of Lakewood, acted as a consultant at Nordson Corporation and volunteered at Elyria City Hall. He received many accolades for his work as Elyria’s Community Development Director.

Norm was a big fan of Cleveland sports teams and enjoyed traveling, researching his ancestry and collecting antiques. He had renovated many historical century homes.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Sheffield Village and was a past director of the Ohio Conference of Community Development.

He is survived by his children: Michael (Leanne) Failing, Jill Failing and Andrew Failing; grandchildren: Ashley (Kevin) Kight, Sydney Failing, Paige Failing (fiancé Abdoullah), Maria Wilson, Mia Jackson, Ivory Jackson and Eddie Jackson; 2 great grandchildren and brother Robert (Marlene) Failing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Suzanne Failing (nee Dennis), daughter Lori Failing and parents Robert & Margaret Failing (nee Berg).

Private family funeral services will be held followed by burial in Lakewood Park Cemetery in Rocky River. The Rev. Paul Pater, pastor of Hope Lutheran Church in Sheffield Village, will preside Memorial contributions can be made to Friendship APL, 8303 Murray Ridge Rd, Elyria, OH. 44035
Arrangements are under the direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain.
