Julius Bahn, 95, U.S. Navy Veteran

He was born in Lorain on June 16, 1925 and remained a life-long resident of the city.

Mr. Bahn was inducted into the United States Navy in July of 1942 and fulfilled duty assignments as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class attached to the U.S. Navy Armed Guard. This unit was responsible for retro-fitting liberty ships with deck guns during World War II. He served aboard a total of eleven ships including the USS Karin, the SS Thomas R. Robertson, and the USS Ardtukus. Julius was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle- Eastern Area Campaign Medal, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was a long-time member of Amvets Post # 47 in Lorain.

Upon his return from military service, he joined the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company and embarked on a career as an engineer that spanned more than four decades with that railroad and its successors, the Chessie System and CSX Railroad. During that time, he especially liked the Holloway, Ohio coal runs. Julius’ dedicated service lead to his acknowledgement as one of the railroad company’s Best of the Best. He was a longstanding member with N.A.R.V.E.

Mr. Bahn was a parishioner of St. Peter Parish in Lorain; he was a former coach for the Lorain Youth Baseball program and enjoyed meeting for breakfast with his friends and former railroaders. He was also an avid poker player.

Survivors include his son Terrence “Chip” Bahn residing in Huron, and daughter Sandy Bahn of Lorain. He also leaves grandchildren Melissa Roman, April Garza, Edwin Roman, Lyndsay Bahn, Alyson Bahn, Wrenn Bahn, Torey Bahn, and Justin Vukulec, and great grandchildren Amber Brown, Joseph Garza, Jacob Kozich, Alyssa Roman, and Bodhi Trimble, and great great granddaughter Jessica Nau.

Julius was preceded in death by his wife Nellie (nee Dudukovich), by a daughter in infancy, son Gerald “Jerry”, parents John and Mary (nee Lesette) Bahn, brothers John, Matthew, and Frank, and sister Rose Krebs.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Additional visitation will be observed on Wednesday in St. Peter Parish (3501 Oberlin Avenue) from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Reverend Craig Hovanec, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to either the American Cancer Society or to St. Peter Parish.
