Julia Sawzin, 98, Enjoyed Sewing, Baking, and Playing Cards

Born in Cleveland on January 15, 1923, she had been a resident of Lorain since 1926. Julia was a 1941 graduate of Clearview High School.
In her earlier years, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Ohio Public Service (now known as Ohio Edison / First Energy).
She was an active parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township where she was a member and past officer of the Altar & Rosary Society. In addition, she worked as a volunteer in the counting room during the parish’s weekly bingo sessions and was a dedicated member of the Holy Rollers who baked nut and poppy seed rolls for church fundraisers. Julia also served as the leader of Girl Scout Troop 620 at St. Vincent de Paul School.
In her free time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking and playing cards. Additional interests included flower and vegetable gardening, league bowling and watching sunsets at the lake. She was also an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians. Julia never missed an opportunity to play corn hole, croquet, or all other games played at her family reunions.
Survivors include her sons Stephen A.Sawzin (Dorothy) of Wilmington, Ohio and Martin Sawzin of Holliston, Massachusetts along with daughters Mary Barnard (Myles) of Wixom, Michigan and Terese Masi (Anthony) of Gahanna, Ohio. In addition, she leaves grandchildren Lyra Read (Jim), Elizabeth Sawzin-Robinson (Eric), Michael Sawzin, Samuel Sawzin, Zachary Masi, Jacob Masi, Mollie Barnard and great grandson Spencer Read. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband Steve in 2011, parents Ignatius and Theresa (nee Cintula) Horvath, and sister Anna Adamcek.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. (Please meet at church) Reverend Neil G. Walters, pastor of the parish will serve as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
