John Smolka, 56, Known for His Tremendous Sense of Humor

Photo of John Smolka John “Johnny” Smolka, 56, of Sheffield Lake, died Friday October 15, 2021 at Mercy Health Lorain after a sudden illness not related to COVID-19. He is now running around with his dog Harvey in Heaven.

He was born January 27, 1965 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Sheffield Lake resident. He graduated from Brookside High School in 1983.

Johnny worked for his close friend Charles Scoffiel at his Home Maintenance & Repair company. Prior to that, he worked for Fairweather Roofing.

Johnny was known around Sheffield Lake for his tremendous sense of humor and legendary Facebook posts. He threw one hell of a clambake every year and also hosted fish fries and Christmas parties. His grandchildren were the love of his life.

He’s survived by his wife Jean Smolka (nee Snezek) who’ve been together for over 28 years; children: Robin Snezek (Nick) of Sheffield Lake and Christopher Berens (Brittany) of Elyria, grandchildren: Anthony & Ava Jean Wodzisz, Calum Berens & Mia; brother Gary Smolka of Elyria, sisters: Gayle Kimpton (Dan) of Florida, Teresa Williams (Dave-deceased) of Sheffield Lake and Christine Clark (Dan) of Vermilion, brother Thomas Smolka (Franny) of Maumee, father-in-law Carl Snezek (Kathy) of Elyria, his dog Charlie and many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Glenn & Rose Smolka (nee Loksa).

The family will receive friends Friday October 22, 2021 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday October 23, 2021 at 9:15 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 521 Harris Rd, Sheffield Lake. The Rev. Stephen Shields, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
