William Charles Hunady, 87, U.S. Army Veteran

He was born November 5, 1934 in Lorain, the middle child of Charles C and Genevieve Hunady (nee Orzechowski).

Bill was baptized and made his first Holy Communion at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and graduated from Lorain High School in the 1952 B class.

After high school, Bill worked for Nelson Stud as a draftsman, Freuhauf in the trailer assembly area and as an electrician’s helper at US Steel.

In 1957, he enlisted in the US Army completing his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky before being stationed at the US Army Air Defense Center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. After 40 weeks of training, he graduated from the US Army Air Defense School as a qualified guided missile electronics technician. For 2 � years, Bill worked on the maintenance of Nike Hercules guided missile program at White Sands Missile Range.

On August 16, 1958, Bill married LaVerne Homola at St John Catholic Church in Lorain and enjoyed 64 years together.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, Bill joined the Lorain City Fire Department in 1961 where he served for 26 years. He also worked part-time as a technician for Sears and managed his rental properties.

During retirement, Bill and LaVerne spent their winters at their home in Punta Gorda Isles, Florida where Bill enjoyed boating and playing golf. He also enjoyed boating on Lake Erie and was a member of the Power Squadron. He and LaVerne took part in many boating trips both on Lake Erie and The Gulf of Mexico. Bill took up golf at the age of 27 and was a member of the Oberlin Golf Club, playing in numerous leagues and tournaments while winning many events.

Bill was an avid fan of the Cleveland sports teams and the Ohio State Buckeyes and attended many games with family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time at the property he owned along Beaver Creek in Amherst.

He was a parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St Peter Parish before joining Nativity BVM Catholic Church in Lorain in 2002.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years LaVerne Hunady (nee Homola), sons Terence Hunady (Julie) and Thomas Hunady (Mike), grandchildren Jake and Jenna, brothers-in-law William Homola, Leonard Homola (Linda), Joseph Homola (Carla) and Gerald Homola (Diana) as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Genevieve Hunady (nee Orzechowski), sister Patricia Bardoner and brother Dale Hunady.

Bill’s family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Rehabilitation and Mercy New Life Hospice for the excellent and compassionate care that he received.

The family will receive friends Wednesday August 24, 2022 from 5:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Additional visiting will be held Thursday August 25, 2022 from 10:30 am until the time of the mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Nativity BVM Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Ave, Lorain. The Rev Craig Hovanec, parish administrator, will preside. Military honors will be conducted by AMVETS Post #32 immediately following mass outside the church. Cremation will follow.

Memorial contributions can be made to Nativity Cares Food Pantry or the Lorain County Metro Parks for the benefit of the Lakeview Park Rose Garden.
