Geraldine M. Terpone, 88, Enjoyed Cooking and Baking

Photo of Geraldine M. Terpone Geraldine M. “Gerri” Terpone (nee Black), age 88, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at her residence on the evening of Friday August 26, 2022.

Gerri was born in Lorain on February 9, 1934 and remained a life-long resident of the city; she was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1952-A

Following her graduation, she worked briefly as an inter-departmental mail lady at United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works.

A parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, she was also a member and former President of the Ladies Auxiliary at St. Joseph Hospital where she worked at the hospital’s information desk for many years. Following the merger of the hospital with Lorain Community / Mercy Regional Medical Center, she continued to serve as a volunteer and toy-buyer in the hospital’s Treasure Chest Gift Shop. In addition, Gerri served as the organizer and coordinator of the Life Line Medical Alert Program at both institutions.

When not involved with activates at the hospitals, she found time to serve as a Presiding Judge for the Lorain County Board of Elections as well as serving as a volunteer with the Meals-On-Wheels program and also as a remedial reading tutor at St. John the Baptist Parochial School.

In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known for her sponge cake recipe. She was also an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed reading romance-murder mystery stories.

Survivors include children Cathy Cahill of Cleveland, Dane Terpone (Jan) of Silverdale, Washington, and Danielle VanHorn (Daniel) of Lorain. She also leaves grandchildren Adam Cahill, Drew Terpone, Taylor Terpone, Zack Terpone, Madelyn VanHorn, Emily VanHorn, and sister Lydia Sroka of Elyria.

Gerri was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Terpone in 1994, parents Alex and Mary (nee Halas) Black, son-in-law Jeffrey Strauss, sister Dorothy Francis, and brothers Alex Black, Jr. and Thomas Black.

Visitation will be today (Tuesday August 30th) from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will take place Wednesday August 31st at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend Mr. Paul Heise, Jr., Permanent Deacon at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.

Contributions in her memory are encouraged to either the Cleveland Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
