Joseph S. Stumphauzer, 85, Enjoyed Camping and Traveling in His Motor Home

Photo of Joseph S. Stumphauzer Joseph S. Stumphauzer, age 85, of Avon, passed away at the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital on the evening of Monday January 16, 2023.

Joe was born in Lorain on April 22, 1937 and was a 1955 graduate of Avon High School. He had been a resident of Avon since 2006 and had previously lived in Elyria Township for thirty years.

Joe was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 for more than a half century; he most recently worked as a heavy equipment operator assigned to the Stevens Painton Corporation completing projects in United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works.

A parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township, Joe and his wife enjoyed camping and traveling in their motor home; among their favorite destinations were annual trips to their winter residence in Palmetto, Florida. They were long-time members of the Emerald Necklace Winnebago Club.

In his younger days Joe played the accordion in a local combo resulting in his love of polka music, polka dancing, and membership in The Cleveland Polka Association.

He was a member of the Elyria Moose Lodge and an ardent fan of all three professional Cleveland sports franchises as well as the Ohio State University football program. He also enjoyed picnics and family gatherings and always strove to remain relevant in the lives of his children and grandchildren by attending their athletic events and school functions.

Survivors include his wife Gloria (nee Alten). On January 11th, Joe and Gloria celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary. He also leaves sons Dale (Angie) and Joseph (Kim) both of Lorain, David (Christine) of Wellington, and daughter Donna Prostejovsky (Bill) also of Wellington. Additional survivors include his daughter-in-law Kelly Stumphauzer of Elyria, eighteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and sister Jane Pope of Lorain.

Joe was preceded in death by sons Daniel in 1996, Dennis in 2013, parents Joseph V. and Yolanda (nee Chaszar) Stumphauzer, and sister Mary Ann Burger in 2009.

Visitation will be Monday January 23rd form 9:00 a.m. until the time of his funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church – 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. Reverend Neil G. Walters will officiate.
