Daniel R. Ramos, 41, Democratic State Central Committeeman from the 13th Senatorial District

Photo of Daniel R. Ramos Daniel R. Ramos, age 41 of Lorain, passed away at his residence on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Born in Oberlin, Ohio on September 2, 1981, he had been a life-long resident of Lorain.

He was a 1999 graduate of Lorain Admiral King High School. While there, Dan possessed a gift for music. He played the trombone in the school’s marching and concert bands, played guitar in the jazz band, and sang tenor as a member of the Chamber Choir. He was also a member and Vice President of the National Honor Society, and served as President and District President of the LEO Club.

Following commencement, he entered The Ohio State University from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 2003. While at O.S.U., Dan was active in student government and served as a Legislative Page in the Ohio House of Representatives. As an avid Catholic, Dan also served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at the campus’ Newman Center.

He began his career in politics by serving as a Legislative Aide for State Representative Joseph F. Koziura. He later served as a Senior Policy and Budget Analyst for Ohio Speaker of the House Armand Budish. In 2010, he was elected as State Representative for Ohio’s 56th House District and served four consecutive terms from 2011-2018. At the time of his election, Dan was the first person of Puerto Rican descent to serve in the Ohio House of Representative and was the first legislator of Latino descent to rise to a leadership position when he became Deputy Whip to the Democratic Caucus in 2013. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Democratic State Central Committeeman from the 13th Senatorial District. Dan spent his life and career striving to make a difference in the lives of others and was honored to serve the community he loved.

Outside of his political work, Dan enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and loved singing and playing his guitar. Dan – or Danny as he was always known to his family – was caring, funny, intelligent and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents Raul and JoAnn (nee Lewandowski) Ramos of Lorain, sister Diane Ramos (Michael McCloskey) of Amherst, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Fernando and Carmen Ramos, and maternal grandparents Joseph and Frances Lewandowski.

Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning with a final visitation at 10:00am and closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m. His Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. in Nativity BVM Catholic Church 1454 Lexington Avenue, Lorain. Reverend Gerald J. Keller, Pastor Emeritus of St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Berea will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
