Clyde C. Childers, 92, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Clyde C. Childers Clyde C. Childers, age 92, of Lorain, passed away peacefully ay his residence on the evening of Monday February 27, 2023.

He was born in Shinnston, West Virginia on June 17, 1930, and had been a resident of Lorain since 1955.

Clyde was a veteran of the United States Army; he fulfilled duty assignments as a Technical Sergeant assigned to 3835th Headquarters Detachment in Korea. Upon his discharge, he was presented the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.

Clyde had been employed as a hooker in the hot end of United States Steel Corporations’ Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1990 following a career that spanned more than two decades with the steel producer. He had previously worked for the General Motors Corporation.

Clyde was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, and attending turkey shoots. He was a member of the Beaver Creek Sportsman’s Club and was also a member and former Sergeant of Arms of the Sportsman’s Gun and Reel Club.

He was a fan of professional wrestling as well as NASCAR and enjoyed following drivers Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Kyle Busch. In addition, he enjoyed watching Life Below Zero and Naked and Afraid on television. Clyde possessed a broad mechanical aptitude which often found him repairing lawn mowers, bicycles, and a multitude of other contraptions and devices. Undoubtedly, his favorite thing in life was spending time with his family.

Clyde is survived by daughter Debra Jean Childers, and son Michael Lee Childers. He also leaves grandchildren Misty Dawn Alvarez (Roberto), Savanna Sue Davis, Stephen E. Weimer, and Travis Leon Carroll Fields, along with seven great grandchildren. Additional survivors include bothers Robert (Sandra) and Ralph (Nancy), sister Annalee Nestor, and sister-in-law Shirley Shockey.

Clyde was preceded in death by his wife Betty J. Childers (nee Poling) in 2017, parents James C. and Mildred (nee Davis) Childers, brothers Don, Dale, and Bobby, and sisters June, Irene, Mary Jo, Nancy, and Eva Marie.

Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Reverend James Justice will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
