Terence Kachur, 85, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Terence Kachur Terence Kachur, age 85, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at Mercy New Life Hospice on the morning of Monday April 3, 2023.

He was born in Lorain on January 7, 1938, and remained a life-long resident of the city. Mr. Kachur was a 1956-A graduate of Lorain High School and a two-year letterman on the varsity baseball team there. He was scouted by representatives of the Chicago Cubs organization but discounted any thoughts of playing professional baseball after he met the hometown girl that eventually became his wife.

During his Junior year at Lorain High Terence enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Following graduation, he transitioned into active duty and fulfilled duty assignments as a crew member aboard several naval destroyers. Among the military honors he received, he was most proud of his induction into the Order of the Blue Nose, an accolade bestowed on sailors when they made their first crossing of the Arctic Circle.

Upon his return, he joined the National Tube Company; after several years of employment, Mr. Kachur left the steel producer and enrolled at Kent State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting conferred in 1968. In 1969 he hired in at the Ridge Tool Company where he served as a cost account manager until the time of his retirement in 2002.

Terence attended St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain; he enjoyed league bowling and later pursued the challenges of golf. Prior to the outbreak of Covid, he could be found on local golf links multiple times each week.

He leaves his son Terence Kachur, Jr. (Bernice) residing in Holland, Ohio along with his grandson Terence Kachur, III also of Holland. Additional survivors include his sister Betty Kachur of Lorain, sister-in-law Mary Kachur also of Lorain, niece Amanda Kachur (Doug Walthen) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, nephews Brian Kachur of Lorain and Eric Koski of Belpre, Ohio and great nieces Kerri Benavides (Ian) of Avon Lake and Emily Koski of Knoxville, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his wife Martha (nee McRaney) in 2008, parents John and Elizabeth (nee Stanko) Kachur, brother Gordon Kachur, and sister-in-law Mary Jane Koski.

Funeral services were conducted privately for the family in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Reverend David L. Rogers, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ officiated. Burial followed in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
