Margaret Catanzarite, 97, Enjoyed Reading, Dancing, and Bowling

Photo of Margaret Catanzarite Margaret (nee Matyas) Catanzarite, age 97, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2023 at O’Neill Healthcare in North Ridgeville, Ohio.

She was born on June 18, 1925 in Elyria, Ohio and graduated from Elyria High School in 1943. She married the love of her life, Julius Catanzarite, on July 22, 1944. They started their new life together after marriage while Julius was serving their country in the United States Navy.

Following the war they resided in Elyria; Marge took great pride in the dream home that she and Julius built and resided in for over sixty years. It was a source of love and joy and home to many picnics with both family and friends.

In her early years Marge worked at J.C. Penney’s and Bendix in Elyria. Following her retirement, she took pride in being an energetic member of her community. She was an active member of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 of Lorain for over fifty years and was also a parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church in Elyria with her late husband for over sixty years.

Her favorite activities included reading, dancing, bowling, bingo, gardening, and canning. Marge was a master in the art of crochet and created numerous gifts for friends and family which are all treasured today. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and a family favorite was her nut tortes. Above all, Marge cherished time spent with family and friends taking great pleasure in family gatherings, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Doris Winter (Dan) of Wakeman, grandchildren Merissa Lisbeth (Mathew) of Wisconsin, Tate Winter (Amber) of Minnesota, Kimberly Winter of Wakeman, and great grandchildren Samantha, Eric, Raegan, and Sydney. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Marge was preceded in death by her husband of seventy-three years Julius in 2017, parents George and Anna Matyas, brothers Raymond Matyas (1975), George Matyas (2015) and sister Helen Karney (2015).

Friends may call on Thursday April 20th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of closing prayers at 10:15 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church – 590 Poplar Street in Elyria. Reverend Joseph Scalco, Pastor of the parish will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

Marge’s family is indebted to the staff and caregivers at both O’Neill Healthcare and Mercy New Life Hospice for their care and compassion for all.
