Gilbert E. Plasencia, 81, Enshrined in the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame

Gil was born in Lorain on October 10, 1941 and was a 1960 graduate of Clearview High School. While enrolled there, he was a standout athlete and multiple varsity letter recipient on the Clipper football, basketball, and baseball teams. He was the starting quarterback on the school’s 1959 state championship team which was enshrined in the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame.
He had been employed as a lineman for the Ohio Edison Company and was based at the company’s North Eaton and Elyria facilities. A long-time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, he retired from the power company in 1996 following a career that spanned more than three decades.
Gil was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake, and was also a member of James L. Martin Council # 637 of the Knights of Columbus.
Formerly serving as a coach for the Lorain Youth Baseball League from 1977 through 1982, he was a fan of all Cleveland professional sports franchises and an ardent lover of dogs.
Gil leaves his wife of sixty years Jane (nee Toth), son Gilbert J. Plasencia (Brenda) of Elyria, and daughters Kim Mossbruger of Walton Hills, and Dena Mead of Amherst. Additional survivors include grandchildren Mick, Mike, and Jaret, along with his brother Rick Plasencia (Susie) residing in Seattle, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his father Sotero Plasencia, mother Betty Plasencia (nee Landy), and sister Cleo Garza.
Visitation will be Monday May 15th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Stephen L. Shields, Pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
