Peter John Jessel, 90, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Peter John Jessel Peter John Jessel, age 90, of Lorain, Ohio left his loving family on the morning of Thursday June 29th 2023 at the Mercy New Life Hospice Center of Lorain, after suffering from a severe stroke just a week prior.

He passed peacefully and with a heart full of love from those that surrounded him in his last days.

We celebrate the long life of John who was born in Lorain, Ohio on May 16th, 1933. He was successful in more ways than one. In his life he made a point to enjoy every moment and cherish every memory made. He was a generous and loving family man who served in the United States Navy and fought in the Korean War where he was honorably discharged. He retired in 1996 from a forty-year career at Lear Romec that treated him and his family well to go on to finally enjoy and accomplish all the things that he loved.

John was an island boy by nature and loved travelling with his family, listening to the music of his youth and just purely enjoying life, whether at Cedar Point or in the confines of his own backyard. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Vermilion, Ohio, a life member of the Amvets Post 22 of Vermilion, Ohio, and a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1442 of Amherst, Ohio. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

He married Mary Ann (nee Kosakowski) Jessel on June 30th, 1956, to go on to celebrate fifty-two years of marriage before she preceded him in death on August 2nd, 2008.

John was also preceded in death by his brother, James Jessel; his mother, Mae Jesse (nee Malisky); his father Peter C. Jessel; and many other aunts and uncles.

John is survived by his three children, Sharon Jessel of Sandusky, Ohio along with Susan (Lewis) Gehringer and Jon (Dede) Jessel, both of Birmingham, Ohio. He also leaves behind his nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and long-time companion, Ruth Branch of Sheffield, Ohio.

Visitation will be observed in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain on Wednesday July 5th, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Mr. John Murray, permanent deacon representing St. Mary Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
