Mary Kolcun, 98, Loved Gardening and Baking

Photo of Mary Kolcun Mary Kolcun (nee Dzundova), age 98, of Henrietta Township, and formerly of Lorain, passed away at Mercy New Life Hospice during the early morning hours of Wednesday October 11, 2023.

She was born in Malcov, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) on February 17, 1925 and was one of fourteen children. She immigrated to the United States in 1961 settling in Lorain.

She worked for Schuster Greenhouse in Elyria and the Ted Jacobs Store in Lorain prior to transitioning to the role of a full time homemaker. Mary loved gardening, did a lot of canning, and enjoyed baking for her family and friends.

She was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain; she was a member of the Rosary Society, a bingo volunteer, and an active volunteer with the Wonder Workers Kitchen which made nut rolls, pirohy, and poppy seed rolls for church fundraisers. Mary was also affiliated with the First Slovak Catholic Union Branch # 228.

Survivors include her daughter Ann Jewell (Larry) of Henrietta Township, sister Helena Niemcova residing in the Czech Republic, along with many nieces and nephews locally and in Slovakia.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Steve in 2004, her only grandson Michael Steven Kolcun in 1999, parents Michael and Maria (nee Rojkova) Dzunda, sisters Zuzana Revilakova, Verona Draganova, Zofia Dzmurova, and Anna Cingelova of Slovakia, special sister Hilde Kleimhans of Amherst, along with brothers Janko, Michael, Andrej, Peter, Joseph, Nicolae, Vasil, and Juraj, all of Slovakia.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel � 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Parastas service beginning at 7:00 p.m. will conclude the visitation. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning with a Panachida service in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church � 2711 West 40th Street, Lorain. The Very Reverend Andrew Nagrant will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
