James D. Sciulli, 76, U.S. Air Force Veteran
James D. Sciulli, age 76, of Sheffield Lake, passed away at University Hospital St. John Medical Center in Westlake on the evening of Tuesday January 21, 2025 following an extended illness.Jim was born in Cleveland on February 9, 1948. At the age of one he came to Lorain where he remained a resident until he moved to Sheffield Lake in 1973.
Following his graduation from Lorain High School and a brief period of employment in the refractory department at United States Steel Corporation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Jim fulfilled duty assignments as a Sergeant attached to the 6314 Supply Squadron in Korea. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Special Operations Commemorative Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; he was a former member of Amvets Post 47 in Lorain.
Upon return from the military, he joined the United States Postal Service where he embarked on a career as a letter carrier. He served postal patrons on Route 5311 in Lorain for more than three decades; Jim retired from the Post Office in 2008.
He was an avid reader with a diverse interest in books pertaining to military history, fitness, and health and wellness. He also possessed a deep interest in the Bible and spent countless hours reading and studying various versions of the prolific book.
When not reading, Jim found relaxation in league bowling as well as bus trips.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years Susan (nee Diaz), son Christopher (Sarah) of Sheffield Lake, granddaughter Lillian Sciulli residing in Missoula, Montana, and sister Hildy Grossman (Richard) of Brookline, Massachusetts.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother Mary Sciulli (nee Provenza) in 1960 and by his father James Sciulli, Sr. in 1998.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel -3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend Harold Hylton, Compassionate Care Pastor at Sheffield Church of God presiding. Military honors will be conducted immediately following by Amvets Post # 32 in Elyria.
