Mattew Moran, 69, Enjoyed Cruises and Casinos
Matthew Moran, 69, of Amherst, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Saturday July 5, 2025 at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born January 27, 1956 in Amherst to George & Marie Moran (nee Breznan) and had resided in Amherst and Elyria most of his life.
Matt worked as a supervisor at Stanadyne Western Steel. After Stanadyne closed, he started a painting and remodeling company and continued working in the construction business until retirement.
Matt was a lifelong member of St Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain where he began to cantor at the age of 14 and served as a cantor for over 50 years. He was a member of the Byzantine Singers, a select a cappella singing quartet specializing in sacred music. The group has participated in the Heritage of Sacred Music during the Lorain International Festival and sang many weddings, bishop ordinations and church functions. The Byzantine Singers have sung a the largest pilgrimage among Ruthenian Byzantine Catholics at Mount Saint Macrina in Uniontown, Pennsylvania since 1995. They were also a Jubilation finalist in 2011 for Cleveland classical radio station WCLV and most recently they were featured in a documentary on EWTN Global Catholic Network’s Treasury of Blessings 100 Years of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church in America. Individually, in 2012 Matt participated in a competition called How Low Can You Go? sponsored by Decca Records of London where he was a finalist for having one of the lowest bass voices worldwide. Over the years Matt was the cantor for numerous funerals and would joke with his wife Michelle about having their date nights in a funeral home.
Matt enjoyed cruises, casinos and the simple things in life like nature and sitting on the back porch looking at the flower gardens. Above all, Matt made it a point to help anyone less fortunate than himself.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years Michelle Moran (nee Marko), Alexei Vandalov whom Matt & Michelle were guardians, siblings: Michael Moran (Rhonda), Mark Moran (Elizabeth), Lisa Knipp, Phillip Moran (Marilee), Nathan Moran, George Moran (Josie) and Jonathan Moran (Carol); sister-in-law Stephanie Moran and many nieces and nephews.
